Getsemaní, Cartagena

A bustling hub of budget hostels, Getsemaní was where I set up shop for the 5 days I was in Cartagena. Whilst the neighbourhood is not quite as picture-perfect as the old town, it is still worth spending some time here. Especially as once the sun sets, the majority of Cartagena's nightlife is based here. In some ways, I preferred Getsemaní to the old town as I felt it had a bit more character but I've always been one to enjoy places that are a little rough around the edges.

The area has some interesting street art too:

Children gather to play football in Plaza Trinidad and when the sun sets, it is a popular meeting place for locals with the Iglesia in the background.

Even the little details like these details were delicately intricate and added to the feel of the place.

If you've been to Cartagena before, what did you think of Getsemaní?

  1. I loved Cartagena. I stayed in El Viejo but stopped by at Media Luna for the big party night. I also found an amazing empanada place in Getsemani. Ah, the memories! Wish I was back there now, despite the intense heat!

  2. Loved Media Luna Hostel (was more expensive than the others but I think it was worth it for the pool). Staff were really friendly to and I think I found the empanada place too, the pork with red wine ones were so yummy! Hoping to check out more of the Carribbean coast especially to do the Ciudad Perdida trek. Will check your blog for tips!

    1. I don't know how anyone couldn't Ayngelina! I'm not big on romance but with South America, it's been hook, line and sinker. I'm already thinking up of ways that I could return to Colombia permanently after graduating. Although knowing my fickle self, I'll travel somewhere else and decide that I could live there too!
